Most kids seem to be animal lovers…at least from a distance! My kids love watching out our back windows to see what the birds are doing each morning while they eat their breakfast. They got to asking how the birds find food and what kind of things birds eat so I had the idea to make an easy bird feeder. We have plenty of twigs and sticks in our yard so we decided to make our bird feeder out of items from the yard. Supplies needed:
- a small piece of cardboard
- twigs/sticks
- glue (super glue or hot glue work best)
- twine/thick string
- washi tape (optional)

Directions for how to make your DIY Twig Bird Feeder:
Gather your supplies and head outside. I laid a towel down to work on. Grab your piece of cardboard and a few of your twigs. Line the outside of your cardboard with your twigs. Apply glue to the bottom of the twigs and press them down on the cardboard. After those have dried, add another layer of twigs on top of the first layer. Add glue to the bottom of the second layer twigs and gently press them down on top of the first layer of twigs. This makes a border for your twig bird feeder so your bird food won’t fall out!
My kids wanted to add a little something decorative. So they took a little washi tape and placed a few pieces on each end. That is totally optional. Some other ideas: you could glue some large pom poms to the sides or even glue some colorful ribbons on the bottom to blow in the breeze.
Once your twigs/sticks are dry, take your string and tie one piece from left corner to right corner and then another string from the opposite corners. We tied our string right on the end of the twigs. Once your strings are tied, you are ready to find a sturdy branch to hand your DIY Twig Bird Feeder on!
Fill your feeder tray with bird seed, small pieces of bread or even crumbled crackers. Your kids will love watching the birds come. You may want to challenge them to see how many different types of birds they can spot. You can help them identify the birds by showing them a few common birds from your area. Do do quick search of “birds common to Tennessee” if you need help with bird identification.
