The Ultimate Hyaluronic Acid & Niacinamide Infusion Cream Recipe

I once whipped up a hyaluronic acid serum right in my kitchen, and later ventured into creating a niacinamide moisturizer. DIY skincare has become a passion of mine, and many curious minds often ask how these two powerful ingredients can be effectively combined.

This Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide moisturizer merges their hydrating prowess into a seamless lotion. You’ll enjoy the moisture-rich benefits of hyaluronic acid along with the skin-enhancing advantages of niacinamide, all packaged in one easy product.

    Combining Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that our bodies need for overall health. Beyond dietary requirements, it offers remarkable skincare benefits. Studies show niacinamide can target hyperpigmentation, providing a more even skin tone. It has also been proven to strengthen the skin barrier and alleviate symptoms of rosacea.

Moreover, it reduces moisture loss while improving issues related to acne and blemishes. A study in 2005 found that women incorporating niacinamide into their skincare routine noticed significant improvements in their skin’s tone, reduction in lines and wrinkles, and overall enhanced elasticity.

Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in our skin, playing a crucial role in moisture retention and overall skin health. It’s vital for wound healing and promotes tissue repair, making it indispensable for maintaining a youthful appearance.

Both hyaluronic acid and niacinamide work synergistically to enrich the skin with hydration while reducing inflammation and promoting collagen production. Their benefits complement each other effectively, making them a perfect duo in skincare formulations.

    Additional Skin-Loving Ingredients

Although hyaluronic acid and niacinamide take center stage, supportive ingredients are essential for crafting a nourishing moisturizer. I’ve chosen a blend of oils, shea butter, beeswax, and water to create a comforting and hydrating lotion.

Carrier oil – This forms the base of the lotion. Options like sweet almond, grapeseed, olive, or avocado are excellent choices. For drier skin types, I recommend avocado or olive oil.

Shea butter – This soft, creamy butter is rich in essential fatty acids, aiding in skin softening and inflammation reduction.

Hydrosol or distilled water – Incorporating this helps blend water-soluble ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. Hydrosols, the fragrant waters left from essential oil distillation, share similar benefits with gentleness.

Tamanu oil – With its dark, rich hue, tamanu oil is fantastic for both acne-prone and aging skin. It’s filled with antioxidants and promotes skin regeneration. If you don’t have tamanu, other oils like jojoba or apricot kernel can work. The goal is to infuse the cream with concentrated active ingredients.

    Incorporating Essential Oils

Essential oils add a delightful aroma to homemade products while offering antimicrobial properties and enhancing skin health. My favorite choices are lavender, wild orange, frankincense, and geranium.

This recipe dilutes essential oils to about 2%, although you may reduce this if you have sensitive skin.

    Tips for Crafting Your Moisturizer

I often lean toward simple oil-based “lotions” for my skincare concoctions. While they might not technically be lotions due to the absence of water, they tend to have a longer shelf life. However, this particular recipe relies on the combination of both water and oils, as both hyaluronic acid and niacinamide need water to dissolve.

Water-based products, unfortunately, have a shorter shelf life. This unique moisturizer finds a sweet spot, utilizing mostly oils, waxes, and butters to stabilize the water enough to dissolve the active ingredients. The addition of water also lends a lighter feel on your skin, making it absorb beautifully.

Emulsifying wax is another key player in this recipe, allowing the water and oils to blend seamlessly. Without it, the moisturizer would separate and lose efficacy. Beeswax adds thickness, but it doesn’t replace emulsifying wax.

    A Key Note on Preservatives

As this formulation contains water, it requires a preservative. Left unchecked, bacteria can proliferate in water quickly. With proper storage techniques, distilled water (or hydrosol), and a natural preservative, shelf life can be greatly extended.

Leucidal Plus is an effective broad-spectrum preservative I’ve previously employed. Many wonder about using rosemary extract or vitamin E instead; however, these options merely delay oxidation and don’t prevent microbial growth.

If opting out of preservatives, keep the lotion refrigerated and use it within two weeks. Nevertheless, using a preservative is the more reliable choice.

Here’s how to bring this moisturizer to life!

Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide Moisturizer

This silky smooth lotion hydrates the skin and seals in moisture without feeling heavy or greasy.

    Active Time20 minutes

    Cooling Time10 minutes

    Yield: 4 ounces

    • In a double boiler, melt shea butter, tamanu oil, avocado oil, emulsifying wax, and beeswax over medium heat, stirring occasionally until fully melted.
    • In another bowl, mix water or hydrosol, niacinamide powder, Leucidal Plus, and hyaluronic acid powder, whisking to combine. Set aside.
    • Once oil ingredients are melted, transfer them into a stand mixer bowl. Chill in the freezer for around 10 minutes until firm but not frozen.
    • Add essential oil, and using the whisk attachment, mix until smooth, creamy, and light.
    • With the mixer running, slowly incorporate the water mixture. Continue whisking for about a minute or until everything is well blended.
    • Transfer the lotion into a sanitized jar.

This recipe allows for customization. Feel free to tailor it with your preferred essential or carrier oils!

    Shelf Life and Storage

Like any skincare creation, it’s essential to store this lotion away from direct light and heat sources. Avoid placing it next to a hot shower or in the car. Use clean, dry hands to scoop product from the jar to minimize contamination.

For storage, consider using a pump or squeeze bottle with a sufficient opening to prevent germs from your hands entering the jar.
