Meghan Trainor has a remarkable talent for transforming the personal into something universally relatable. Whether she’s belting out an anthem of self-love, candidly discussing her mental health, or humorously sharing intimate details about her life with her husband, Daryl Sabara, she exudes a sense of playfulness that makes her feel like that friend you’d grab coffee with to catch up on life.
Her latest venture, TBH, only deepens our admiration for her. It’s so true to her spirit that she would have a little fun at her own expense, appearing in a lighthearted State Farm commercial alongside NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes, athletic trainer Julie Frymyer, and the ever-charming Jake from State Farm. It highlights Meghan’s ability to keep life light, even amidst her busy schedule.
It’s a remarkable full-circle moment for Trainor, who once lined up on the offensive line playing center with her brother during their childhood. Today, however, her game has shifted. Instead of preparing for a play on the field, she’s navigating the beautiful chaos of parenthood with her two little ones—Riley, 4, and Barry, 2—all while balancing a flourishing career as a pop icon and prioritizing the mental health of her family. Talk about a whirlwind season of life!
In a lively Zoom conversation with Scary Mommy, Meghan opened up about her current projects and personal life.
Scary Mommy: Your commercial is such a blast! What was the vibe like on set with Patrick Mahomes and Jake from State Farm?
Meghan Trainor: Honestly, the second I arrived, I felt silly! I was decked out in this fabulous, oversized pop star dress, and I was determined to embrace my new, vibrant style. But walking onto that set? I was like, “What am I doing here?” Then I got to meet Jake from State Farm and was completely starstruck. He was the warmest guy! Chatting with Patrick and the amazing trainer Julie made my day—everyone was so kind, and instantly I realized, “This is going to be a great vibe.” I just wanted to bring laughter to the set; that was my goal!
SM: Taylor Swift recently mentioned how being a performer is just as physically demanding as playing pro sports. Having played a little football yourself, what’s your take?
MT: Oh wow, I can totally relate! Last summer, I went on my first tour in eight years and was scared to death! I focused hard on my fitness, like I was prepping for battle. I wanted to survive! Honestly, I felt like an Olympian (though I’m not one) and was determined to make it through. Seeing other artists go out for years is awe-inspiring. I only did two months, but it was a wild ride, and I still can’t even fathom the level of training someone like Taylor or Beyoncé must go through.
SM: You’ve been incredibly open about your mental health journey. Why is it essential for you, especially as a mom, to share that?
MT: Growing up on the East Coast, I never heard anyone talk openly about mental health. I started therapy in high school and honestly felt odd for seeking help. My dad wasn’t a huge fan of the idea, either. Things have changed now, and I’m all about advocating for open dialogue about our feelings. When I hear someone share their struggles, it reassures me I’m not alone. Actually, I placed my 4-year-old into therapy for a specific challenge he was facing, and it helped him tremendously. It just shows that sometimes we need to talk to someone and let it all out, even if we don’t realize how much we’re carrying.
Despite hitting my 30s and being in the best shape of my life, I still find moments where my mind feels heavy, like there’s more to unpack. I’ve started diving into breathwork and meditation—and while it can be exhausting, it’s been so rewarding too.
SM: Many people underestimate the power of shared experiences and talking things out.
MT: Absolutely! So many suffer for far too long simply because they think they have to. It doesn’t have to be that way—it’s OK to reach out for help! It took me a while to get there, but now I actively seek it.
SM: You mentioned wanting to do something that scares you every year, plus the idea of expanding your family. Could those two things intertwine?
MT: Oh, without a doubt! Life can be downright scary. I would love a daughter—it’s been a dream of mine! If I could have four kids, I would. Going back to the commercial—doing it absolutely terrified me! I was super nervous about hitting my lines, almost studying for an Oscar-worthy performance. Yet, when I arrived and they said to just be myself, I found joy in the spontaneity—and when I made everyone laugh? That was the best.
SM: You’re in the thick of parenting two little ones. What’s exciting about their ages, and what have you found challenging?
MT: Oh, there’s so much about parenting that no one warns you about! You realize how long it takes for kids to even say “I love you.” We’ve spent years saying, “I love you to the moon and back,” and now my 4-year-old has turned it into a playful competition of “I love you farther.” Watching him grow and express his feelings is incredible. Then there’s my 2-year-old, who’s finally bursting with personality—his laughter is infectious, and it’s like watching him wake up to life. It’s truly magical.
In sharing these personal stories, Meghan Trainor not only demonstrates her vulnerability but also crafts connections with those who resonate with her journey. Her candid nature is a reminder that we’re all navigating the complexities of life together, and that’s something truly powerful.
