Co-parenting is often seen as a roadmap for separated or divorced parents who aim to raise their children together despite no longer being in a romantic relationship. In recent years, the concept has gained traction, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and friendship between parents for the well-being of their kids. However, not everyone aligns with this narrative. One notable voice in this conversation is rapper and TV personality Nick Cannon, who, in a recent episode of his podcast *Nick Cannon @ Night*, expressed skepticism about the very term “co-parenting.”

During the episode, a listener posed a thought-provoking question about managing the complexities of multiple co-parenting relationships while dating. They sought insights that might resonate with blended families, a reality that Cannon knows all too well. The 44-year-old father of 12 has his unique perspective on parenting dynamics—he believes that the term “co-parenting” oversimplifies what parenting truly entails.

“I’ve always had an issue with the term ‘co-parenting,'” Cannon shared candidly. “To me, it’s just parenting.” His viewpoint suggests that labeling this process might inadvertently add layers of complexity, creating preconceived notions about what it should look like. In his experience, when parents compartmentalize their relationships with labels, it can lead to misunderstandings and potentially harmful assumptions.

Cannon is transparent about the journey he is on. “I haven’t figured it all out yet. I’m still learning,” he admitted. What he does know is that approaching every situation with respect and compassion is crucial. Each relationship, especially those involving children, deserves to be treated with its nuances and individuality, rather than being lumped together under a common banner.

Referring to the mothers of his children, Cannon remarked on the importance of recognizing their individuality. “I really try my hardest not to say, ‘Oh yeah, my baby mamas,’ unless it’s in a lighthearted context,” he explained. “No one wants to be grouped together. Everyone wants to be treated like an individual with respect and compassion.” His approach underscores a key principle in successful parenting: valuing the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the people involved, rather than reducing them to mere titles or labels.

Cannon’s journey into fatherhood began when he had twins, Moroccan and Monroe, with ex-wife Mariah Carey in 2011. Since then, he has welcomed 10 more children, including sons Golden Sagon, Rise Messiah, and daughter Powerful Queen with Brittany Bell; twins Zion and Zillion, and daughter Beautiful Zeppelin with Abby De La Rosa; a son, Legendary Love, with Bre Tiesi; and his daughter, Halo Marie, along with his late son, Zen, with Alyssa Scott. He also shares a daughter, Onyx Ice, with LaNisha Cole.

Through it all, Cannon emphasizes that parenting—regardless of the relationships involved—demands understanding, respect, and a genuine connection from all parties. It’s this respect that lays the foundation for a nurturing environment for their children, proving that at the end of the day, loving and supporting kids is what truly matters. Whether you’re part of a traditional family structure or a blended one, fostering mutual respect amongst co-parents can help create a healthier, more positive atmosphere for everyone involved.
