Why Your Dog Chooses A Carpet For Its Upset Stomach

We all know the feeling: the moment your beloved pet starts retching, your heart races. The instinct to save that precious rug or carpet kicks in. Why, oh why, do our dogs and cats seem to gravitate toward the softest surfaces when they’re about to bring up their last meal? It’s almost as if they have a built-in radar for upholstery!

    Why Does This Happen?

The truth is, while we joke about it — “Of course, you’d pick the rug!” — there isn’t a straightforward answer. Stephen Quandt, a certified feline behaviorist, quips that pets have a knack for timing their mishaps when it’s most inconvenient for us. “Imagine it’s Sunday; that’s when they decide to make a mess!” he jokes. While this may not be “scientifically proven,” it certainly feels true!

Dr. Aimee Warner, a resident veterinarian at Waggel, sheds light on what’s really going on. It’s not that our furry friends are being naughty; they’re actually following their instincts. “Things like rugs and carpets provide traction, which helps them feel secure during that vulnerable moment,” she explains. Smooth surfaces, like tile, can be slippery and daunting, especially when they’re feeling unwell. It’s like they’re searching for a hidden corner in their home that feels safe and familiar.

But does all of this mean they feel scared? Not necessarily. Warner insists that for most pets, throwing up isn’t an emotional ordeal. Instead, it’s more about their physical discomfort. Sure, some pups might pace or salivate beforehand — but this behavior often reflects discomfort rather than actual fear. It’s a gut reaction, and they’re not replaying the situation like we sometimes do!

Should You Try to Move Your Pet?

Now, imagine your pet is about to let loose on the rug you were just admiring. Should you rush in and relocate them? Quandt advises against physically moving them during such a moment; doing so can add stress. Instead, if you’re able, gently placing something like paper towels underneath them can help contain the mess.

“I remember the first time we took Felix, my cat, into my parents’ backyard,” Quandt shares. “He munched on grass like it was an all-you-can-eat buffet! Once inside, I could see the heaving begin. Knowing what was coming, I instinctively held my hands beneath him. Not everyone is as prepared for vomit as I am, though!”

Warner agrees that, if you can calmly guide your pet to a more manageable spot without startling them, that’s fine. “Just make sure to keep everything serene. Fast moves can create anxiety, and that’s the last thing your pet needs while they’re feeling unwell.”

    When Should You Seek Help?

Not every instance of vomiting is a cause for alarm. If your pet gets sick but seems otherwise fine, and is acting like their usual self, there’s generally no need to panic. However, if they’re continuously retching, are lethargic, or if there’s blood in the vomit, it’s time to call your vet. Vomiting can indicate underlying health issues, so if you have concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out.

And while you’re at it, take a look around your home. Pets are notorious for getting into potentially harmful things. Whether it’s raiding the trash can or munching on something they shouldn’t have, knowing what’s gone into their system can help your vet make an informed decision.

Remember, our pets can’t speak, but understanding their behavior can make all the difference in how we respond to their needs. We’re all in this together — the love, the messes, and everything in between.
